Nixi black pottery is the most famous intangible cultural heritage in Shangri-La used by all Tibetan households for cooking as well as cultural and religious ceremonies. Nixi chicken hotpot also comes from this region, but compared with the famed black pottery the knowledge and understanding of this craft is cherished much more. Despite success, these craftsmen have maintained a 2000-year-old heritage and a non-arrogant attitude. They simply sit quietly in their workshop focusing on making black pottery, which shows a certain discipline and respect for the art form. We will visit Master‘s studio and we will get to learn how to make a small black pottery.

This form of pottery is essentially the secret of every local’s kitchen. Nixi black pottery acts as a medium between water and fire, conveying the temperature to the ingredients by stewing food. As a result, food is cooked with the authentic earthy taste whist maintaining the original flavor of ingredients that modern cookware cannot replicate.
